Court Reporter Pet Peeves – Interrupting
Interrupting is one of if not the most common reasons that attorneys complain to court reporting agencies about the court reporters. Ironically, one of the biggest pet peeves that court reporters have with their agencies is when the agency does not support the court reporter when a client calls to complain that the court reporter was interrupting too often.
Below are real quotes from court reporters when asked what agencies can do to help reporters when it comes to whether or not to interrupt.
“Back them up when a lawyer or law office calls to complain that “the reporter interrupted too much,” by telling the lawyer and law firms that “the role of the court reporter is to make a verbatim record. It is the reporter’s responsibility to interrupt if they are unable to keep the record without. We fully support our reporter’s decision to keep the record in whatever manner they deem necessary.”
“Back your court reporter up if you receive a phone call about his/her interrupting or asking for multiple clarifications. Understand that you (the person on the phone/at the agency) weren’t there and you have no way of knowing if your court reporter was having a bad day, can’t handle the job, or was having as much difficulty as everyone else in the room understanding the witness — or the attorney for that matter.”
“agencies should support the reporter if the reporter needs to interrupt. s/he is the only one in the middle of the record and knowing whether or not s/he is getting the record. Or require advanced certifications for speed and accuracy…”
